Breaking News: ESSURE Birth Control Discontinued

When we think of birth control, we typically think of the pill, the shot or an IUD. But, just as technology advances, so does “big pharma”. A newer form of birth control that you’ve probably seen advertised on TV is ESSURE. “What is ESSURE?” you may wonder. It is a quick 10-minute non-surgical procedure consisting of a soft, flexible mechanism that a doctor inserts into your fallopian tubes without any cutting. Unlike other birth control methods, ESSURE is permanent and cannot be reversed.

As of July 20, 2018, Bayer, the maker of ESSURE, announced they were discontinuing sales of ESSURE and will no longer sell or distribute the product after December 31, 2018. This news comes after the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) took action in April of 2018 by limiting sales to doctors who ensured that they were actively informing women of the risks associated with using ESSURE, at the same time holding Bayer responsible for the injuries many women have endured.

According to Drug Watch, more than 16,000 (and growing) women across the U.S. have filed personal injury lawsuits, accusing Bayer of hiding safety evidence and failing to report serious side effects from the FDA by lying on its application for device approval. They also claim Bayer failed to properly train physicians on how to implant ESSURE.

Side Effects Associated with ESSURE:

  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Bleeding
  • Bowel or bladder injury
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Depression
  • Device migration
  • Dizziness
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Essure coil breakage
  • Fainting
